We’ve been on these roads more than a few times, or so we thought.

On the map, this one looked like it ended at Lake Erie. On a whim, I asked Audrey to turn left and see where it went. I didn’t expect much. I thought it would be more of the same old, same old.

I was wrong. We hadn’t been down that road before. It opened onto a place I hadn’t seen, and there was a red ice fishing hut sitting at the edge of the water. I stopped to take it in. The sign, the windows, the little details on the building, and the wide lake behind it all held my attention.

That is one of the pleasures of taking another drive with Audrey and the pups. We can pass the same familiar roads and still miss a turn, a side road, or a place waiting just beyond the bend. Sometimes all it takes is asking, “What’s down there?”

I came home with a new photograph and a reminder to stay curious about places I think I already know.
