Flower Box
Audrey and I were driving somewhere, although I have now forgotten where we were going. I was in the passenger seat when I noticed this old workshed beside a rural road.
It wasn’t a planned photograph. It was one of those surprises that appeared along the way, so I asked Audrey to turn around.
I’m not completely sure what attracted me to it. It was probably the colour of the flowers against the dull, almost monochromatic grey of the weathered boards. The building looked worn and neglected, but someone had taken the time to plant and care for those flowers.
It didn’t take long to photograph. I made a few exposures, got back into the car, and we continued on our way.
The image sat on my desktop for quite a while. Recently, I returned to it and cleaned it up. Looking at it again, I realized how naturally it fits with the rest of my work. I photograph overlooked objects, quiet places, and the traces people leave behind. Nobody appears in this photograph, but someone’s presence remains in that carefully planted flower box.
I’m submitting Flower Box to Alamy, Adobe Stock, and Getty Images. I’m also making it available as a print.
